Portable solar lamps to Yolanda-hit communities

The portable solar lamp was among the many developments of Cebu Technological University seen during the Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) on June 20 through 22.

Former University Vice President for Research Cecilio Baga  told UPO about how the project came to be. Inspired to aid victims of Yolanda in Daanbantayan, Cebu’s northern point, his team launched a project in 2014 with the help of the German International Corporation.

Known to have its longstanding advocacy in Asia, the company supplied materials to the university’s Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics (BSMX) students who assembled the parts of the portable solar lamp, except for the bamboo-made frame (of concave-convex cuts in two layers) that supports the whole unit.

Once completed, the units were sent out to Daanbantayan residents, that have been very helpful to them until now.

The meeting that had taken place in his office three years ago propelled other individuals such as Dr. Paul Zabala, Dr. Mario Rebucas Jr., Prof. Romeo Montecillo and Dr. Marcial Sosas of CTU Main to be part of the endeavor.
