CTU Barili opens first biotech center in Central Visayas

CTU President Rosein A. Ancheta Jr. (C) leads the inauguration on April 13.

CTU Barili opened the Center for Studies in Biotechnology yesterday, April 13, putting Campus Director Genes Pasaje and the rest of CTU in a better position—–“”We are now on an equal footing with other universities which are known for research in agriculture and biotechnology.”

First in Central Visayas, the center facilitates studies in bio-science engineering systems technology, plant biotechnology, bioresources technology, and food/feed technology.

The southern locality now brings an even greater potential for Cebu to do more investigations in terms of the aforesaid fields, which address some of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Yesterday’s inauguration was packed with regional and local dignitaries—Department of Agriculture regional technical directors, DOST-7 Dir. Edilberto L. Paradela and Barili Mayor Marlon F. Garcia—-to promote research by all means especially in the country’s economic hub.

Dr. Pasaje, in his speech, is hoping for quality research activities right after the launching.

Critical to the university’s development is raising its status as “research-intensive university” as pointed out by Dr.Ancheta, which according to him could help much in its quest to be in the top-27 list of renowned Philippine universities.

He cited that improving the university’s research capabilities would mean having “enough infrastructure.” Hence, “This is a dream come true.”

It houses two conference halls, a staff quarter, a preparation room, an analytical laboratory, a collection and culture room, and a science café.

Prof. Petroey Pascual, a faculty member who frequents BIOTECH in Thailand (as part of CTU Barili-BIOTECH partnership), provided the groundwork leading to materializing the second research facility of CTU in the southern part of Cebu (as there is Biodiversity Center in CTU Argao).

The Center of Studies in Biotechnology will be open to the public on Monday, April 16. UICPA/ ICPA Barili
