CTU Unites: The 4th Sen. Angara Unity Cup

Cebu Technological University (CTU) proudly hosted the 4th Sen. Angara Unity Cup, a celebration of unity and diversity through the power of sports. Under the theme ‘Embracing the Diversities of Life Through Sports,’ the event brought together the student athletes across campuses to compete and foster camaraderie. Spanning from April 14th to 19th, 2024, the various tournament held at the campuses of CTU – Danao and Carmen, resonating with the spirit of sportsmanship and inclusivity.

The university-wide event was made possible through the initiative and effort of Dr. Nemia Zamora, University Director for Sports and Wellness and Dr. Francisco Lucero, University Director for Arts and Culture under the visionary leadership of Dr. Rose Mary Almacen, Vice President for Student Affairs, Production, and Resource Generation.

During the stirring opening Salvo, Dr. Joseph C. Pepito, the University President, emphasized the essence of sportsmanship, drawing from his own youthful experiences. Reflecting on his basketball days, he humorously recounted moments of confusion when games seemingly transitioned into impromptu boxing matches, underscoring the importance of fair play and respect.

“Sauna magduwa me og basketball, naglibog ko if basketball ba kay nagsinukmagay naman, dili na basket (basketball) boxing na…”   

The array of tournaments featured a diverse range of sports, including Athletics, Baseball, Football, Softball, Tennis, Arnis, Badminton, Futsal, Karatedo, Sepak Takraw, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, and Volleyball. Additionally, the inclusion of E-sports (Mobile Legends), Chess, Basketball 5×5, Beach Volleyball, Mr. & Miss, and Dance Sport.

As student athletes showcased their skills and determination, they also exemplified the values of teamwork, respect, and mutual understanding, thereby reiterating the legacy of Sen. Angara’s vision for unity and collaboration. l Almie Mata
