Vice President for Research and Development (VP-RD) Dr. Adrian T. Ybanez, in his keynote speech addressed to faculty researchers and innovators, underscored the importance of contributing to the knowledge and innovation economy by increasing the intellectual property (IP) assets of Cebu Technological University (CTU).
โInnovation [and knowledge transfer] would mean nothing until utilized and commercialized,โ quipped Dr. Ybanez, encouraging faculty researchers and innovators to navigate innovative pathways especially as the University became a beneficiary of the Department of Science and Technologyโs (DOST) grant to establish the Intellectual Property Technology and Business Management (IPTBM) in 2023.
This pronouncement by VP Ybanez was stressed during the three-day training and workshop organized by the IPTBM and the Knowledge Transfer and Technology Transfer Office (KTTO) under the University Office of Research and Development (R & D) in partnership with the IPTBM Office of Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) on July 1-3, 2024, at the One Central Hotel, Cebu City, Philippines.
The training series was conceived to expand the knowledge of the academe, the MSMEs, and researchers about the importance of Intellectual Property registration, and protection, leading to technology adoption and transfer, up to commercialization.
The first day covered the following activities: Overview of the CTU IP Policy by Prof. Siegfried Mendoza, IPTBM-ITSO University Director; Overview of the CTU Technology Transfer Protocol by Engr. Naomi A. Bajao; Intellectual Property Assets from Ideation to Commercialization by Dr. Vannie Joy T. Resabal, KTTO Director of MSU-IIT; and Prior Art Searching and Claims Drafting by Dr. Johann Heinrich P. Malongo, ITSO Director of Negros Oriental State University. Prof. Janeth S. Ugang, KTTO Chair/ Licensing and Database Manager of CTU, led the launching of the IPTBM Virtual Platform for easy access to intellectual property information of the University.
The next day comprised the Patent Drafting activity by no less than Associate Dean of the College of Engineering-CTU Main Dr. Jun-Jun A. Obiso. This was followed by a workshop and mentoring facilitated by Prof. Girlie F. Fariola, Project Staff, RATBI. Ms. Dayien T. Lizada, FOB Secretariat of DOST-7 capped off the day by discussing the FOB Guidelines and Requirements. On the last day, Dr. Malongo returned to explicate the Transfer Plan and Technology Assessment Protocol (TAP), Assessing Technology Readiness Level (TRL) & Commercialization Readiness Level (CRL).
In the afternoon, Engr. Bajao walked the audience through Valuation of CTU IP Assets.ย This was complemented by Dr. Mario P. Rebucas Jr. Project Staff of RATBI, on Technology Licensing Agreement.ย Dr. Marlou C. Godinez, Project Staff of RATBI, delivered the closing remarks, followed by the closing ceremonies and photo ops. Dr. Maria Domnena Anog and Prof. Abrahem P. Anqui served as the emcees of the training series.
Engr. Bajao and the ITSO-KTTO team were hopeful that the 3-day training would enhance the technical knowledge of faculty in the IP registration process especially since the R & D office has a target of training at least three faculty members from each campus/college to increase their proficiency in IP valuation and commercialization, facilitate and support them through the online IP registration process to achieve at least a 5% increase in filings during the third quarter of 2025, aligning with the targets defined in the Major Final Output (MFO) for Research and Development.
