Student leaders across various campuses of Cebu Technological University (CTU) gathered to tackle climate change initiatives.
In a seminar-workshop hosted by CTU, the Future Science and Technology Leaders of the Philippines (FSTLP) student leaders from CTU Main, Argao, Barili, Moalboal, and Carmen campuses take part in tackling climate change initiatives on November 18, 2024.
In his opening message, the University Director for RD Centers, Dr. Egardo P. Lillo, emphasized the significance of involving students in tackling global challenges such as climate change. Dr. Lillo also stressed during the workshop that student initiatives should be permanent solutions, not temporary ones.
The Director of the Center for Climate Change and Resiliency at CTU Argao, Dr. Steve Michael Alcazar, led the seminar and shared critical insights on climate change issues, including the problems associated with the Philippine land classification system. Dr. Alcazar also lectured on crafting project proposals with SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis.
Following the seminar session, the student participants from each campus engaged in a workshop where they applied the SWOT analysis to their climate change proposal initiatives. Among the initiatives proposed are Main Campus’s seminar on climate change, Argao Campus’s proposal to include a Climate Change Week in the school calendar, Barili Campus’s plan to create a native tree nursery incorporating smart farming technologies, Carmen Campus’s project on developing bioplastics from seaweed, and Moalboal Campus’s campaign to raise awareness about climate change. Dr. Alcazar and Dr. Lillo served as panelists during the workshop.
Providing guidance and feedback on the proposed initiatives, Dr. Alcazar emphasized that the best solution to climate change is nature-based, highlighting the importance of sustainable, eco-friendly solutions.
This event underscored the critical role that student leaders play in regional development and equipping students with the tools and knowledge to create lasting impact through their initiatives. The event also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal No. 13 (Climate Action) – the fight against climate change.
