Mandaue City, Cebu โ€“ In a significant step toward revitalizing the local coffee industry, Cebu Technological University (CTU), in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture-Central Visayas (DA7) and the Local Government Unit of Tuburan (LGU-Tuburan), conducted a two-day Research Proposal Development Workshop for the Improvement and Sustainability of Tuburan Coffee on February 18-19, 2025.

Tuburan, Cebu, renowned for its local product “Tuburan Coffee,” is striving to sustain and expand its coffee production. This research initiative aims to address the challenges facing the industry, ensuring its growth and sustainability.

CTU Vice President for Research and Development, Dr. Pet Roey L. Pascual, played a pivotal role in leading the universityโ€™s efforts in crafting research proposals to aid the Tuburan coffee sector. Along with his team, Dr. Pascual underscored the importance of evidence-based solutions to enhance the productivity, quality, and market competitiveness of Tuburan Coffee both nationally and internationally.

DA7 Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulations, Dr. Wilberto O. Castillo, emphasized that the research will not only explore Tuburanโ€™s potential as a premier coffee production area but will also contribute to strengthening the entire local coffee industry.

Tuburan Mayor Democrito Diamante shared insights into the humble beginnings of coffee farming in the municipality and outlined the local governmentโ€™s vision for expanding the reach and brand image of Tuburan Coffee. Municipal Agriculturist Kent Catubis also provided an overview of the industry’s current state, highlighting pressing concerns such as an aging farming population, inconsistent management practices, reliance on monocropping, and the need for tree rejuvenation and rehabilitation.

The workshop resulted in the development of four key research proposals focusing on different aspects crucial to the sustainability of Tuburan Coffee. These proposals include production management, pest management, geospatial studies, and social research. Each area aims to provide targeted solutions that will enhance coffee cultivation techniques, improve pest control measures, utilize geospatial technology for optimized farming, and analyze the socio-economic impact of the coffee industry on local farmers.

The workshopโ€™s research proposal outputs will serve as a strategic roadmap for future initiatives aimed at improving coffee production, enhancing quality, and expanding market access. The DA7 reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the local coffee industry through research and development efforts that empower farmers and ensure long-term sustainability.

CTUโ€™s active participation in this initiative reinforces its dedication to agricultural research and community development, further solidifying its role in driving innovations that benefit local industries and the regionโ€™s economy.
