John Rowen C. Miano, a second-year BS Statistics student from Cebu Technological University (CTU) and President of the Future Scientists and Technology Leaders of the Philippines (FSTLP), earned the prestigious 2nd Best Research Poster Presentation award at the 1st Student Research Colloquium on Statistical Sciences held at the University of the PhilippinesโCebu (UP Cebu) on May 28, 2025.
Mianoโs research, โRevealing Land Use Dynamics in Armed-Conflict Hotspots in North-East Nigeria Using Earth Observation Dataโ, drew attention for its international scope and relevance. His study utilized satellite-based Earth Observation data spanning from 2000 to 2022 to explore how armed conflict in northern Nigeria has disrupted land use, displaced communities, and impacted urban and agricultural development.
Through spatial analysis and statistical modeling, Mianoโs work offers critical insights into the long-term effects of conflict, making it a valuable resource for policymakers and humanitarian organizations seeking to assess and address these challenges.
As the only CTU representative and the sole sophomore among senior researchers, Mianoโs achievement is remarkable, showcasing both his academic ability and the growing influence of statistical sciences in real-world issues. He was among student researchers from UP Cebu who presented his work in front of a panel of experts in the field.
โIt was a daunting task,โ Miano admitted. โBalancing academic demands, including finals, with preparing for this event was challenging. But representing CTU with this research was a tremendous honor.โ Despite minor technical issues during his presentation, the judges praised Miano for his in-depth analysis and the quality of his poster and research, which stood out among a competitive pool of participants.
This recognition marks a significant milestone in Mianoโs academic journey, further solidifying his commitment to using statistics for the greater good. โThis motivates me to continue refining my skills and applying what Iโve learned to make an impact in both academia and the community,โ he shared.
Mianoโs success also serves as a testament to CTUโs growing reputation in research excellence, as well as the leadership role of the FSTLP in nurturing young talent in the fields of science and technology.
