Sta. Fe, Cebu, Philippines โ In a strategic move to foster inclusive growth and climate resilience, the BWASSANGDAGAT project was launched to empower marginalized fishermen in Barangay Okoy, Sta. Fe.
This community-based livelihood initiative is chaired by Professor Nicolas P. Antigua, led by Dr. Marjorie L. Zanoria, and supported by Dr. Ruben M. Ungui of Cebu Technological University Daanbantayan Campus Director, along with Professor Girlie Fariola, Officer-in-Charge of CTU Bantayan Extension Campus.
Held on June 16, 17, 27, and 28, 2025, the project trained 28 local residents (19 men and 9 women, aged 36 and above) in sustainable, value-added livelihood practices. Key training modules included:
ยท Food Safety and Sanitation
ยท Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
ยท Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)
ยท Packaging, Labelling, and Marketing
ยท Processing of local products: bottled mackerel, dried boneless danggit, virgin coconut oil (VCO), and creamy turon
The initiative was made possible through collaboration with a local partner that provided the venue, equipment, and logistics. Implementation involved faculty members from CTU Daanbantayan and CTU Bantayan, pre-service BTLED teachers, and the Extension Services Office.
BWASSANGDAGAT exemplifies how academic-community partnerships can drive sustainable development. By equipping fisherfolk with entrepreneurial skills and practical training, the project strengthens food security, boosts economic resilience, and promotes environmental stewardship.
As climate and economic pressures mount for coastal populations worldwide, BWASSANGDAGAT offers a scalable, community-driven model for sustainable transformationโgrounded in empowerment, education, and local innovation.
