CTU Main College of Education (COEd) successfully conducted a five-day teacher training lecture-workshop series on ‘Reading Across Disciplines’ for High School Teachers of Tejero National High School, from June 23 to 27, 2025, at Tejero NHS, Cebu City.

This initiative is part of their GAA-funded research project “AI-Generated Application in Teaching Reading Across Disciplines to Public Schools,” headed by the BSEd English, BSEd Filipino, and BSEd Science programs of COEd.

The one-week teacher training, geared towards enhancing reading instruction across disciplines, featured five university teacher-researchers sharing their expertise as training specialists and workshop facilitators with participating high school teachers. They covered topics on reading instruction and provided innovative strategies and best practices to help teachers develop their skills in teaching reading.

In his speech on Day 1, Dr. Gilbert T. Tito commended the CTU teacher-researchers for their dedication in sharing knowledge and best practices with the participants. Dr. Cristie Ann L. Jaca, Research Project Leader, Reading Specialist, and Trainer, then presented the rationale of the training, stressing the critical role of reading skills in all learning areas.

Throughout the week, CTU training specialists led comprehensive sessions, integrating theory and practice, followed by interactive workshops where participants designed and demonstrated reading-based lessons relevant to their fields.

Dr. Jaca discussed the “Foundations of the Teaching of Reading: From Phonics to Comprehension,” identifying strategies for teaching beginning and transitional readers. Meanwhile, Dr. Alma C. Valendez talked about “Designing Reading-Enriched Lessons with Assessment,โ€ focusing on applying differentiated instruction and assessment strategies.

The topic โ€œInnovative Methods in Teaching Reading across Disciplinesโ€ was tackled by Dr. Mary Jane C. Sim, who explored methods such as task-based learning, communicative approach, and literature circles. Dr. Juliet O. Mandado centered her discussion on โ€œInteractive approaches in Teaching Reading in Filipino,โ€ demonstrating interactive and contextualized reading strategies. Further, Dr. Esperanza M. Del Fierro spoke on the integration of reading scaffolds in content-area instruction, with her topic being “Content-Based Reading Instruction in Science.”

The week-long activity ended on a high note, with participants expressing heartfelt gratitude for the enriching experience and key learnings gained on crafting engaging and effective reading environments for their students.

Through the CTU-Tejero NHS partnership, the university bolsters its proactive efforts to advance student outcomes and quality reading instruction through research-driven professional development.
