CTU-Main, Barangay Tisa sign MOA for Phase 2 of food waste reduction program

Cebu Technological University–Main Campus formalized its partnership with Barangay Tisa through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing on April 29, 2026, marking the launch of Phase 2 of its community extension initiative on food waste reduction and sustainable consumption.

The agreement, signed at the Tisa Barangay Hall, covers the project titled “Food Waste Reduction Towards Sustainable Consumption: A Carbon Literacy Program at Barangay Tisa, Cebu City – Phase 2 (The Edible Wall and Clean Compost Initiative).” The initiative is led by the Department of Pure Sciences and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics under the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of CTU-Main.

Barangay Captain Bernardo L. Lapiña Jr. signed the MOA alongside the CTU-Main CAS Community Extension Team, signaling a joint commitment to promote sustainable household practices and low-carbon living within the community.

Building on the findings of Phase 1, the program addresses persistent challenges in translating environmental awareness into long-term household practices, particularly in composting and food production. Initial assessments identified limited residential space and predominantly cemented surroundings as key constraints to composting and urban food production.

In response, Phase 2 introduces practical and context-specific solutions tailored to urban living conditions. These include space-efficient gardening methods such as container-based and vertical systems, as well as composting techniques suited for concrete environments, including Bokashi composting.

Through the initiative, CTU – Main aims to equip households in Barangay Tisa with accessible and sustainable strategies for managing food waste, improving food security, and adopting low-carbon practices despite spatial limitations in a highly urbanized setting./Al Rayan Tomalondog – CTU Main BAEL Intern
