CTU, DPWH-7 launch bridge monitoring system with Indonesian expert

To build technical capacity in bridge health assessment and establish groundwork for real-time monitoring across regional infrastructure, Cebu Technological University (CTU) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office VII concluded its capacity-building program on June 24 to 25.

The two-day training, held at the DPWH-7 Office in Cebu City, convened 30 district and planning engineers from across the region alongside international academic expertise, with Dr. Ade Yuniati Pratiwi of Lambung Mangkurat University, Indonesia, serving as the resource speaker.

Dr. Ade delivered a lecture titled ‘Bridge Behavior and Current Design Principles in Bridge Design,’ where participants were introduced to the technical foundations of a real-time monitoring system, examining how environmental factors affect bridge integrity and exploring the sensor and data fundamentals behind a device developed through CTU’s engineering research.

The activity transcended standard training, serving as the first step toward a DPWH–CTU partnership for device deployment.

The program was led by CTU’s College of Engineering and its Sustainable Center for Engineering and Next-Generation Technology (SCENT), in partnership with DPWH Regional Office VII.

Formally opened by DPWH Regional Director Engr. Simon N. Arias, the program featured Dr. Hana Astrid R. Canseco‑Tuñacao, CTU Extension Project Lead, who outlined the program’s objectives and conducted a technical session on the shear‑dominant behavior of cracks in reinforced concrete.

She was joined by faculty from CTU’s Civil, Electronics, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering departments, who delivered sessions on river flow analysis, accelerometer‑based monitoring, IoT systems, and anomaly detection in structural health data.

Beyond a single training, the closing roundtable formalized a continuing channel between DPWH Region VII and CTU’s SCENT Center and College of Engineering, where field deployment will generate data and challenges feeding back into CTU’s research pipeline. 

The Bridge Monitoring System (BMS) program exemplifies how university research, when placed directly in the hands of its implementing agency, can address real-world infrastructure challenges while advancing safer, more resilient public works.

The program culminated in a roundtable led by the program head, uniting DPWH stakeholders and CTU researchers on future BMS collaboration, followed by certificate awarding and closing remarks from Engr. Gerry Escolano of DPWH Region VII. 

By equipping 30 districts and planning engineers with monitoring technology and fostering sustained exchange, the program advances CTU’s mandate as a premier science and technology university.
