CTU research team secures grant for Metro Cebu BPO mapping, commute inequality study

A research team from Cebu Technological University in Main Campus, led by Bachelor of Science in Statistics student John Rowen Miano, with Dr. Robert Jay Angco and Prof. Julius Selle as co-applicants and research advisers, has secured a research grant of ₱25,000 under the WTA Labs Research Grants Program 2026 for a study on Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) activity and commute inequality in Metro Cebu.

Their proposed study, titled “Mapping the Nocturnal City: Satellite Evidence for BPO Cluster Detection and Commute Inequality in Metro Cebu,” seeks to map Metro Cebu’s nighttime BPO activity and assess commute inequality among night-shift workers using satellite imagery and community validation.

The findings aim to support more inclusive transport planning and evidence-based urban policies for the city’s nocturnal workforce.

WTA Labs Research Grants Program advances studies on urban and community development challenges through community‑centered, interdisciplinary approaches. Under this initiative, CTU’s research team will receive ₱25,000 to implement the study in 2026.

The study will be carried out through the College of Arts and Sciences Research and Development Office at CTU Main Campus, with support from the Future Science and Technology Leaders of the Philippines (FSTLP), a university-wide student organization led by Miano as President since 2024.
