Cebu Technological University (CTU) Carmen Campus is making a tangible impact on local communities by integrating education, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Its recent extension program, “Utility Models Ko, Para sa Negosyo Mo: Innovations for Business Operations and Management,” held from September 5 to October 3, 2025, demonstrated how university-developed technologies can turn creative ideas into practical livelihood opportunities. Dr. Richard Agustin, as the program’s proponent, coordinated the initiative, which brought together the Hospitality Management Department, Industrial Technology, Technology and Livelihood Education, and BSFI, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration for the benefit of participants.
Held in Barangay Cantumog, Carmen, the program trained members of the Cantumog Farmers’ Association (CANTUFA), under the guidance of President Mr. John Rey Tambasakan and with the support of Barangay Captain Hon. Felix B. Quiamco. Participants completed 80 hours of hands-on training, learning to develop innovative food products using CTU-developed utility models, including Shrimp Paste with Thyme, Kerson Leaf Tea with Blue Ternate Flowers, Passion Fruit Ice Cream, Sambong Pastillas, Halymenia Jam, Blue Cake, Dragon Fruit Chiffon Cake and more.
These activities provided practical lessons in entrepreneurship, product innovation, and value creation, equipping participants with the skills and confidence to transform locally sourced ingredients into market-ready products. Inspired by the program’s success, one beneficiary proposed a Phase II, focusing on labeling, packaging, and marketing to enhance the products’ commercial appeal.
“The goal is to show that innovation isn’t just for labs—it’s for our streets, homes, and markets,” Dr. Agustin said. With initiatives like this, CTU Carmen continues to bridge education and community development, empower residents, strengthen partnerships, and cultivate sustainable livelihoods and inclusive growth.
Special thanks to Dr. Anthony S. Ilano, Campus Director, and Barangay Cantumog Councilors Ms. Eva Canellas and Mr. Allan Adolfo and students for their invaluable support throughout the program.
