CARMEN, CEBU – June 5, 2026 — The 62nd Commencement Exercises of Cebu Technological University (CTU) Carmen Campus became more than a celebration of academic achievement as graduates received their diplomas in hand crafted diploma cases made from handwoven sinamay, showcasing the university’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and cultural preservation.
The production of the sinamay diploma cases was spearheaded by the University Shared Facilities (USF) staff under the CTU Carmen DTI FabLab. Utilizing indigenous handwoven sinamay, the project transformed a traditional local material into functional and aesthetically appealing diploma holders for graduating students.
The initiative was conceptualized not only to provide durable and unique diploma cases but also to promote the value of indigenous materials and local craftsmanship. Through the expertise and creativity of the USF personnel, the handwoven sinamay was carefully processed, fabricated, and assembled into diploma cases that reflected both academic excellence and Filipino cultural heritage.
According to project implementers, the use of sinamay demonstrates how locally available natural fibers can be integrated into modern product development while supporting sustainable practices and community-based industries. The project likewise highlighted the expanding role of the CTU Carmen DTI FabLab as a center for design, fabrication, and product innovation.
