The aroma of freshly steamed siomai and the rich scent of moist chocolate banana cake filled the air in the CTU-Danao production area as the university conducted livelihood skills training session for job order employees and various stakeholders on March 18, 2025, aiming to equip them with food processing skills that could be used to start small business ventures.
This initiative was led by Dr. Jacqueline R. Dela Cruz in coordination with the CTU-Danao Extension Office, the Danao City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), and Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) students and faculty. It is part of the K.U.S.I.N.A sa Kababaehang Danawanon (Knowledge Upgrade and Skills Improvement for New Aspirations) program, which held its first session the previous week.
During the training, participants were guided through each step of preparing siomai and moist chocolate banana cake, from learning how to prepare the ingredients, season the fillings, and wrap the siomai for steaming, as well as batter for the cake. They were also taught about food safety, proper storage, and hygiene practices to ensure the quality of the products.
The training was met with great enthusiasm, as many participants expressed interest in using their new skills to generate extra income. “Happy kaayo ko nga naa ko’y bag-ong na-learn nga skill (I am very happy that I learned a new skill),” shared one participant.
CTU-Danao remains dedicated to expanding its community outreach through sustainable livelihood programs, reinforcing its vision of education not only as a pathway to knowledge but also as a tool for social transformation.
