Cebu Technological University (CTU) Danao Campus, through its Extension Services, successfully launched the “Gulayan sa Luyang: A Community-Based Initiative for Sustainable Nutrition and Livelihood” on July 26, 2025.
The program aimed to empower low-income households by providing knowledge on sustainable gardening techniques that improve family nutrition, enhance household food security, and support income-generating activities. Through hands-on sessions such as composting and seed planting, participants learned how to maximize small spaces to grow fresh, nutritious vegetables at home.
The initiative was led by Dr. Ivy A. Batican, together with Graduate School faculty members Dr. Jacquiline R. Dela Cruz, Dr. Catherine C. Terana, Dr. Romel C. Mutya, and Dr. Gladies Mae Olivar, in collaboration with graduate students from the Master of Technical and Vocational Education (MTVEd HET). The program was also made possible with the support of Barangay Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Council, headed by SK Chairman Hon. John Wesley Euldan and the STCD Rover Scouts.

Participants also attended nutrition awareness sessions, organic fertilizer demonstrations, and a livelihood talk focused on basic gardening practices that promote wellness and create community-based economic opportunities.
Each participant received a starter gardening kit, which included plastic bottles, cutters, scissors, gloves, seedlings, seeds, compost, and a planting guide to help them establish their own home gardens.

More than just growing vegetables, Gulayan sa Luyang is about cultivating hope, promoting healthy living, and encouraging sustainable community development. The collaborative efforts of the faculty, students, and implementing partners made this initiative a meaningful and impactful experience for the residents of Barangay Luyang.
