CTU Danao Promotes Local Heritage Preservation through “Alima sa Kabilin sa Kultura”

The Cebu Technological University (CTU) Danao Campus, through its Extension Services and in collaboration with the BSEd Social Studies program, successfully launched the cultural heritage preservation project, “๐€๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐š ๐ฌ๐š ๐Š๐š๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ง ๐ฌ๐š ๐Š๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š,” on October 3, 2025, at Catarman, Liloan, Cebu. Led by Dr. Emily C. Costan, the community extension team from CTU Danao engaged participants from local puroks in Catarman to promote the preservation of their cultural heritage and provide training on the proper documentation of tangible cultural artifacts.

The initiative was supported by Dr. Felix C. Costan, Dr. Jefry Tagud, Dr. Ivy C. Carascal, and Prof. Emerita M. Tan, who facilitated discussions and activities highlighting the importance of safeguarding Catarman’s unique cultural identity and heritage.

The program commenced with a prayer, followed by a welcome message from Ms. Chona Pilapil, President of Purok Carrots 1 and the Catarman Purok Federation, emphasizing the community’s role in heritage preservation. Dr. Emily C. Costan then led a cultural discourse complemented by booklets prepared by third-year BSEd Social Studies students, which detailed local heritage and the need for proper documentation.

Participants were encouraged to identify and document cultural artifacts within their communities, such as the traditional “Banga” clay jar, antique sewing machines, traditional graters, and charcoal ironsโ€”items that represent the daily lives and history of Catarman’s people. These discussions fostered meaningful exchanges and a collective appreciation for their rich cultural background.

Moving forward, the project plans to conduct site visits to document the identified artifacts, with Dr. Jefrey Tagud and Prof. Emerita M. Tan coordinating schedules for the puroks involved. Each participating purok received bond papers and printer ink to support these efforts, facilitating ongoing documentation activities.

Throughย “Alima sa Kabilin sa Kultura,”ย CTU Danao strengthens its commitment to empowering communities to safeguard their cultural heritage, ensuring that Catarman’s legacy is preserved for future generations.
