CTU Danao Takes Its First Leap on Local Heritage Preservation with “Alima sa Kabilin sa Kultura”

The Cebu Technological University (CTU) Danao Campus, through its Extension Services, and in collaboration with the BSEd Social Studies program, advanced its cultural heritage preservation project, “Alima sa Kabilin sa Kultura,” with the implementation of its second phase on October 10, 2025, in Catarman, Liloan, Cebu. This phase, led by Dr. Emily C. Costan, featured in-person interviews with artifact owners and direct examinations of identified cultural artifacts in the community.

Along with selected BSEd Social Studies students, the project team included Dr. Felix C. Costan, Dr. Jefrey M. Tagud, Dr. Ivy C. Carascal, and Prof. Emerita M. Tan. The group conducted heritage visits to three puroks—Purok Carlosville, Purok Pechay, and Purok Alugbati—marking the first of several scheduled visits under the project. Each purok visit was facilitated by faculty leaders: Team Carlosville, led by Dr. Emily and Dr. Felix C. Costan; Team Pechay, by Dr. Jefrey M. Tagud; and Team Alugbati, by Dr. Ivy C. Carascal and Prof. Emerita M. Tan.

The session began with purok representatives presenting their compilation of photos and descriptions of cultural artifacts discovered in their communities. Among the highlighted items were antique jars, vintage sewing machines, carved wooden boxes and drawers, and a centuries-old wooden table passed down through generations. The following interviews revealed fascinating stories behind each artifact, prompting discussions exploring their historical and cultural significance. These conversations provided students with valuable insights and fostered an appreciation for the role of material culture in shaping local identity.

In addition, direct artifact examinations were conducted to document each object’s physical characteristics—including carving details, materials, and condition—along with measurements such as height, width, and weight. This meticulous process supported accurate documentation and strengthened the participants’ understanding of how tangible artifacts serve as vital records of heritage. Students also captured photographs of each artifact to accompany the documentation, ensuring the preservation of each piece’s physical and historical essence.

Through the combined efforts of CTU Danao faculty, students, purok representatives, and artifact owners, “Alima sa Kabilin sa Kultura” continues to uphold its mission of safeguarding local heritage—reviving and preserving the stories embedded in the community’s cultural artifacts for future generations.
