CTU Danao Promotes Sustainable Farming Through Hydroponics in Carmen, Cebu

The Cebu Technological University (CTU) Danao Campus, through its Extension Services, successfully implemented the extension project “Sa Pagpananom nga Malungtaron, Hydroponics Maoy Solusyon – Soil-Free, Worry-Free!” on April 16 and April 26, 2026, at Brgy. Cogon East, Carmen, Cebu. The initiative marked a significant effort to empower the local community with innovative, sustainable agricultural practices suited to modern-day challenges.

The activity was spearheaded by Dr. Marlon D. Mata, alongside Engr. Tomashita P. Arenas and Engr. Amadito P. Buot Jr., with the active involvement of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) students. Their collective expertise fostered a meaningful learning experience that effectively bridges technical knowledge and community engagement.

Throughout the sessions, participants were introduced to hydroponics, a soil-free farming method that utilizes nutrient-rich water solutions for plant growth. The first session focused on building foundational knowledge, including the principles, advantages, and practical applications of hydroponics, particularly for households with limited space and resources.

The second session emphasized experiential learning, where participants engaged in the actual construction and assembly of a simple, low-cost hydroponic systems. Guided by the facilitators and student volunteers, community members gained hands-on skills that enhanced their confidence in adopting the technology for sustainable food production.

The project highlighted the value of integrating engineering innovation with extension services, as students applied their technical competencies in designing fucntional systems for community use. The active participation of residents refletced a growing interest in alternative farming methods that promoted food security and environmental sustainability.

Through this initiative, CTU Dano continues to strengthen its commitment to community-centered extension programs—fostering innovation, resilience, and sustainable development among its partner communities.
