Serving the community through extension projects is an annual task and responsibility of every college in response to the University’s mission and goals. The College of Technology, particularly the BIT Garments Technology, BTLED of the College of Education, and MAVEd of the Graduate School, conducted a school-based extension project titled “TANUD (Tahi-Bansay sa mga Asawang Naningkamot sa Umaabot nga Dakung Kaugmaon)” for the unemployed housewives of Brgy. Mangga, Tuburan, Cebu.
The training, which lasted 240 hours, started on July 8, 2023, and ended on February 23, 2024. It was held every Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Garments Technology shop. The project was approved for GAA funding, providing free tools, materials, and starter kits to all successful participants.
According to the latest barangay profile, Brgy. Mangga had the highest unemployment rate. To address this, the project proponents attended the monthly sessions of the barangay officials and conducted a Training Need Assessment to identify the preferred trainings. A Memorandum of Agreement was signed, with the barangay pledging to provide transportation for the participants throughout the training duration.
An orientation was held at the Garments Technology shop to disseminate the project goals and objectives. Hand-outs and necessary tools and materials were provided. On-the-Job trainees from relevant university fields assisted the participants individually, especially in project making. The training utilized thirteen Hi-Speed sewing machines and two Overlock machines, following TESDA Training Regulations. A progress chart was used to monitor participants’ outputs and motivate them to complete the projects.
The training covered the following competencies:
1. Taking body measurements: Demonstrated by the trainer in the mother tongue, with a review of tape measure reading in English and Metric systems.
2. Drafting and cutting patterns: Step-by-step demonstrations ensured accuracy.
3. Preparing and cutting fabrics: Techniques to minimize wastage and ensure accuracy were taught.
4. Operating Single Needle Lockstitch Sewing machine (SNLS) and Overlock machine: Safety precautions and machine operations were demonstrated.
5. Assembling garments: Participants constructed various garments, applying finishing touches.
6. Preparing materials and assembling throw pillows with cases: Leftover fabrics were used to advocate zero-waste.
To celebrate the participants’ hard work, a culminating activity was held on February 23, 2024, at the Conference room (3rd floor Administration building). Participants wore their best outputs, and certificates of completion were awarded. Inspirational messages were delivered by Dr. Ma. Carla Y. Abaquita (Campus Director), Prof. Devonna M. Celedonio (Extension Director), and Hon. Josefina Cuesta (Barangay Captain of Mangga). The program concluded with a buffet shared by the participants and visitors.
