Mapping the Impacts of Russia – Ukraine War: CTU Students Use GIS to Uncover Environmental Shifts

BARILI, Philippines — In an innovative effort to connect global conflicts with environmental awareness, the Future Science and Technology Leaders of the Philippines (FSTLP) at Cebu Technological University (CTU) Barili Campus hosted a one-of-a-kind event titled “Echoes of the Russia–Ukraine War: Mapping Environmental Shifts.” The activity combined geopolitical analysis with cutting-edge GIS technology, offering participants a rare opportunity to explore the environmental impacts of war and the role of youth in addressing global challenges.

The event focused on analyzing the real-world consequences of the Russia–Ukraine war, particularly its overlooked environmental impacts. Participants engaged in a discussion about how war affects ecosystems, agriculture, and global food security. Using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, attendees mapped the borders of Russia and Ukraine and analyzed changes in vegetation before and after the conflict using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI).

This hands-on workshop demonstrated the intersection of global issues and technological solutions, aiming to empower students with a deeper understanding of international crises and their ripple effects on communities worldwide. It also highlighted how advanced tools like GIS can transform abstract global events into tangible data, fostering both awareness and action.
The activity took place on November 23, 2024, a timely response to ongoing discussions about climate action, sustainability, and the human cost of conflict. The date underscores the importance of raising awareness about pressing global issues and ensuring that younger generations are equipped to face these challenges.

The workshop was held at the computer laboratory of CTU Barili Campus, a setting that reinforced the university’s commitment to using technology for education and innovation. By hosting the event locally, CTU made global conversations accessible, bridging the gap between international issues and their relevance to Filipino students.

The event was organized by the Future Science and Technology Leaders of the Philippines (FSTLP), showcasing the leadership of students in tackling complex global challenges. It was supported by the CTU Barili Campus Director for Research and Development, Dr. Jeremy P. Mondejar, a GIS expert whose guidance was instrumental in the technical and educational aspects of the activity. Dr. Mondejar’s expertise and mentorship brought depth and credibility to the discussions and hands-on training, inspiring participants to use technology as a tool for societal good.

This activity was more than a workshop; it was a call to action for the youth to understand their role in a globally interconnected world. By combining geopolitical awareness with cutting-edge technology, the event reflected CTU Barili’s alignment with the values of innovation, social responsibility, and sustainability. Participants left not only with new skills but also with a broader perspective on how war and peace impact the environment—and how they, as future leaders, can contribute to solutions.
