On December 2-3, 2024, innovators, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders from across the region gathered for the much-anticipated Innovation and Technology Transfer Summit Visayas 2024. Held under the theme “License to Innovate: Connecting Innovators and Industry,” the event served as a dynamic platform for collaboration and exchanging groundbreaking ideas. Hosted at Marco Polo Hotel, the summit highlighted the vital role of technology transfer in fostering innovation and economic development in the Visayas.
The summit attracted over 100 participants, including representatives from academic institutions, government agencies, startups, and established corporations. Through plenary sessions, panel discussions, and technology pitching, attendees explored the latest trends and challenges in innovation, intellectual property licensing, and commercialization.
One of the event’s highlights was the keynote address by Sec. Renato U. Solidum Jr., DOST Secretary and a renowned technology transfer expert, emphasized the importance of partnerships between academia and industry. “Innovation thrives when we break down silos and build bridges,” Engr. Tresvalles remarked. “The Visayas region has tremendous potential to lead in this space, but it requires a collective effort.”
The summit also showcased various projects from local universities and research institutions, ranging from sustainable energy solutions to cutting-edge devices. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with inventors during an interactive exhibit, which underscored the region’s rich talent pool and innovative spirit. The Cebu Technological University (CTU) proudly showcased an array of delicious food products and unique delicacies crafted by the talented faculty from its Tuburan and Main campuses.
In addition to presentations and exhibits, the event featured a business matchmaking program to connect innovators with potential investors and industry partners. This initiative resulted in several promising collaborations, including a local university and business partnerships spearheaded by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce members.
Government officials in attendance reaffirmed their commitment to supporting innovation through policy initiatives and funding opportunities. Regional Director, Engr. Jesus F. Zamora Jr., CESO III, of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), stated, “We are committed to creating an ecosystem where innovation is encouraged and thrives. The partnerships forged here today are crucial for our region’s growth.”
The Innovation and Technology Transfer Summit Visayas 2024 successfully fulfilled its mission of connecting innovators and industry. By providing a venue for meaningful dialogue and collaboration, the summit reinforced the Visayas’ position as a burgeoning hub for innovation in the Philippines. As attendees departed with new insights, connections, and opportunities, the event’s legacy as a catalyst for regional development and technological advancement was firmly established.
