The (Institutional Biorisk Committee (IBC) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) committees under the supervision of the University Research Ethics Office (UREO) and the Research and Development of the Cebu Technological University organized a training-seminar on “the concepts on laboratory animal, animal research and biosecurity” on March 12-14, 2020. This activity which was participated by the different HEIs in the region was held in CTU Main Campus and Barili Campus.
Dr. Adrian Ybanez, Vice-President for Research and Development and the Chair of IACUC, gave the overview of the training course.
Topics on the first day included animal welfare, animal care and standards and techniques in managing and experimenting laboratory animals.
Further, the second day, March 13, 2020 held in Barili Campus focused on experimental designs and animal models with practicum in handling mice, rat and guinea pig.
The third day held in CTU Main Campus highlighted the biosecuriry and biosafety, risk assessment, mitigation and control measures.
Resource speakers were from the Department of Agriculture, Dr. Verna Agriam; Research Institute of Tropical Medicine, Dr. Daria Llenaresas Manalo and Mr. Rodolfo Perez; and National Training Center for Biosafety and Biosecurity in UP Manila, Dr. Gianne Eduard Ulanday.
Dr. Joy dela Pena, one of the participants said, “this was my main takeaway from the 3-day seminar: biosafety awareness and practices have a silent urgency that has implications for the welfare of both individuals and institutions. We need to reinforce key persons and strengthen biosafety programs to ensure this welfare.”-rmmm/ccmr
