On December 13, 2024, ย NSTP students of CTU San Francisco Campus, including participants from the National Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC), Leadership Training Service (LTS), and Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS), engaged in a successful tree planting activity at Sitio Liong, Sta. Cruz, San Francisco, Cebu. The event aimed to promote environmental stability and was part of a series of activities funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies – Youth Action Climate Action Fund, organized by the San Francisco LGU. The Bloomberg Philanthropies – Youth Action Climate Action Fund is a program that provides funding and technical assistance to help young people design and implement climate solutions in their cities.
The agency funded two youth-led projects, which conducted a series of activities aimed at mitigating climate change and fostering youth collaboration in addressing climate issues and influencing policy-making.
Prior to this activity was a seminar on Climate Change Awareness for Teachers and Students under the Climate Capability Project dubbed as โClimate Capability of DepEd Secondary Teachers and Students of San Francisco, Cebu,โ with DepEd as the partner agency.
This initiative was a collaborative effort involving CTUโs Center for Limnological Aquatic Biodiversity and Mariculture Studies (CLABMS), the NSTP, the Climate Change and Resilience Center (CCRC), and CTU Argao Campus. The tree planting activity was graced by CLABMS Director Maximino R. Abejo III from CTU San Francisco, along with esteemed guests from CTU Argao, including Dr. Steve Michael T. Alcazar and Dr. Archiebald Balthazar B. Malaki of the Climate Change and Resilience Center (CCRC). Their research assistants, Mr. Bernardo Redoblado, Delfin Alcazar, and Ponciano Edsel Tovilla, were also present for a collaborative research study titled “Carbon Storage Management in the Vicinity of Lake Danao, San Francisco, Cebu.” Forester Bernardo Redoblado from the College of Forestry at CTU Argao demonstrated the proper techniques for planting seedlings without damaging the leaves. He instructed, ‘Hold the plastic receptacle, not the seedling or the stem, to keep the plant alive.’ Following his guidance, each student was given two seedlings of native trees to plant. The students proceeded to their assigned blocks, cleaned the area, planted the seedlings, and applied fertilizers as instructed. This tree planting activity highlighted the youth’s dedication to environmental stewardship. As the trees grow, they will stand as a testament to the students’ commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable future for all.
