CTU and AFACO Seal Partnership for Solar-Powered Future in Tuburan

Tuburan, Cebu – July 5, 2025 — In a significant milestone for sustainable development and rural electrification, Cebu Technological University (CTU) – Tuburan Campus and the Alegria Farmers Agriculture Cooperative (AFACO) formally signed a usufruct agreement to establish a 100kW solar mini farm under the EDP HatSPotSCC 3.0 (Electricity Decarbonization Program: Harnessing the Sun’s Power Through Sustainable Community Cooperation Phase 3).

The ceremonial signing, held at the Alegria Farmers Association (AFA) Meeting Hall, marked the official partnership between CTU and AFACO for the long-term use of the mini solar farm. The project aims to promote clean energy and strengthen the community’s energy resilience through a sustainable, community-driven power generation model. This landmark agreement solidifies the collaboration’s long-term vision of energy sustainability and cooperative development.

Prof. Devonna M. Celedonio, Chairperson of CTU’s Extension Services, delivered the Statement of Purpose, emphasizing the university’s commitment to community empowerment through science and technology. Engr. Naomi A. Bajao, the Project Leader, provided an overview of the project’s objectives and expected impact, followed by an inspirational message from Dr. Ma. Carla Y. Abaquita, Campus Director of CTU-Tuburan.

Engr. Fernando N. Mangubat Jr., one of the project proponents and Dean of the College of Technology, gave a detailed presentation of the project design, highlighting the environmental and social benefits of transitioning to renewable energy sources.

Representing AFACO, Chairperson Mrs. Cheryll T. Bandilao shared the cooperative’s excitement and gratitude for being chosen as a key partner in this groundbreaking initiative.

Following the program, the CTU extension team, AFACO board members, and community beneficiaries proceeded to the project site for the groundbreaking activity—a symbolic first step toward the realization of the solar power facility. Amidst the scenic hills of Barangay Alegria, participants witnessed the installation of the project marker, heralding the rise of a cleaner and brighter energy future.

The event was hosted by Mrs. Belinda Q. Orquia of the BSIT Department and attended by key members of CTU’s Extension Team, AFA members, AFACO leaders and members, and more than 20 community beneficiaries from various puroks of Barangay Alegria.

Rooted in strong community collaboration and driven by university-led innovation, EDP HatSPotSCC 3.0 stands as a promising model for localized clean energy transformation in rural communities across the Philippines. It embodies the spirit of CTU’s extension services mantra: “Sa katuyuang labaw sa kaugalingon”—a commitment to serving a purpose greater than oneself.
